Interview with Paul McGowan of Ps Audio

Tell more about you and about your entry in cables "game"

We got into the cable "game" when we realized there were no good AC power cables on the market. At the time we entered into this area, there were one or two attempts at a high end power cable on the market, but they were really just glorified stock cables.

We designed, from the ground up, the world’s first truly high end power cable known as the Lab Cable. This was the start of the high end power cable market as we know it today.

Following the success of the Lab Cable and its successive xStream power cable line, we decided to build a line of audio interconnect and speaker cables that would compliment our audio line. We realized part of the problem with audio cables is they always lose something — the trick is to see if that loss can’t be minimized and trade offs made that would favor our own audio equipment designs. This work took about 1 year and at the end of it, we had a new cable line that not only fit our products perfectly but worked well with other equipment.

The thing to remember with cables: there is no perfect cable. Cable’s lose some information along the way. They cannot add, they can only subtract, So the trick to designing an audio cable is to have it lose as little as possible in the areas of greatest sonic importance.

The history of your involvement in hifi industry and research…

More about the beginning of your Firm

Please go here for a complete history: http://www.psaudio.com/articles/history.asp

I have been involved for over 30 years as a designer and manufacturer.

Which is your opinion about Cable industry in general

The cable industry, as it pertains to the specialty or high end marketplace, is filled with too many claims and product information that has no scientific engineering basis. Cables do sound different. However, to imply that cables "add" to the sound or to imply that they defy the rules of physics are two areas we hear and read a lot about.

It is important to have a clear and factual message about cables. Our company has always stayed away from the exagerated claims and the designs that use exotic materials and constructions "just because". PS cable products adhere to accepted engineering practices of good shielding, proper conductors, excellent connectors, etc.

Cables are about what is not there — as opposed to adding something. A passive device cannot "add" anything. Common misbelief would suggest some cables have better bass, better highs, etc. In fact, "better bass" comes from having the full bass spectrum available on the cable. Other cables have "less" bass because they are missing parts of the frequency spectrum. Nothing can be added.

The "question" of cables prices and the understanding Cable Pricing

That’s a tough question. Certainly there are more than a few cable companies charging outlandish sums of money for cables with zero justification. We do not agree with the thinking process and feel that it hurts the industry as a whole.

Snake oil and cables manufacturing

Plenty of snake oil and cable! We do not subscribe to this — making claims of magic or any other such nonsense.

The future of hifi cables industry and the future of your firm

I do not have much of an ability to predict the future, unfortunately.

Our firm is a medium sized specialty audio and AC power company. We will continue to make products with great value, that are built on sound engineering practices and build products we are proud to own and use ourselves.
